SUMMARY:Sail Pleasure Island, catch marina's new look
DESCRIPTION: Give Bill Worsham a sunny, breezy day on Pleasure Island and he’s ready to cruise… his boat on Lake Sabine. “There’s no commercial traffic. Winds are 80 percent steady from the Southeast at 10-15 knots,” said Worsham, who is also pretty keen on the island’s birding, fishing and wildlife. This sailing instructor is partial to Pleasure Island: It’s his home. For those just visiting, Worsham says the average boat draft is 5 feet, there’s fuel in Sabine Pass and it’s a 15-mile, or three hour, sail to the Gulf of Mexico. Adventure seekers and locals have crossed the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge to fish the waters, go birding or play some disc golf for years, but there’s something new in paradise. Pleasure Island Marina operators have improved 300 slips. The new look includes 250 floating aluminum docks, 50 covered stalls for smaller fishing boats and a 626-foot floating concrete break wall to cut wave action, Jimmy Dike, Pleasure Island Commission director, said. Lighted pedestals resembling lighthouses, electricity and water at each slip and the long-wearing floating docks, which offer a classic wood look, will be perks mariners can expect. The bath house offers welcome refreshment for sailors returning to shore. Port Arthur and Pleasure Island’s assets will be featured at the at Reliant Center, June 19-23. Stop by booth 707 for news of the area’s rich fishing zones. Pleasure Island is also home to Cajun Cabins, RV parks, a driving range, Fun Island Depot playground and areas for birders, crabbers and anglers to set up a family picnic. The second Pleasure Island Half Marathon, 10K and 2-Miler is set for Nov. 9. Runners will navigate the expansive bridge, coming and going.

SUMMARY:New Paddle Trail at Sea Rim Marsh Unit
DESCRIPTION: Pack your kyak for a new paddle trail by Sea Rim State Park. Sure the surf [caption id="attachment_3993" align="alignright" width="500"] Paddle Sea Rim's Marsh Unit[/caption] and sand is a lure, but right across the road, the Sea Rim Marsh Unit offers a quieter commune with nature. Ben Herman, park superintendent, said new paddle trails are being marked for beginners, who may bring canoes or flat-bottomed boats for a two-mile route through the bird-filled marsh. The intermediate trail is a little longer and the advanced trek is about nine miles. Herman reminds nature lovers that once in the state park legally, guests can fish or crab without an additional license. Spoonbills and teal ducks are frequent visitors, he said. Sea Rim is a huge day-use park and improvements, such as the new West Dune boardwalk and two open-air showers, are part of ongoing plans to appeal to overnighters. “This park has more snow birds than any park I’ve been in,” he said, referring to northern travelers drawn to the Gulf Coast’s long sunny season. Regular park admission is $3 a person for the beach area and another $3 a person for the marsh area. The beach side also offers the Gambusia Nature Trail, where visitors can look for gators and shore birds that make this marshy area home. A few feet from the trail is five miles of natural beach where families can play in the sand, swim and fish. SUMMARY:Stir the pot at Taste of Gumbo, Etc.
DESCRIPTION: A rich pot of gumbo, brimming with seafood or sausage, stirs up a pot of memories for Southeast Texans. Aromas of the brown brew over white rice call to mind family reunions, grandma’s recipes and second helpings. “It’s our culture,” Dr. Mark Porterie, King Gumbo for the Port Arthur Rotary Club’s 26th annual Taste of Gumbo, Etc., said. This fete gathers area restaurants, service groups and businesses who claim bragging rights to their best blends as they dish up tastes for charity. Serving will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at the Robert A. “Bob” Bowers Civic Center in Port Arthur. For just $8, attendees can sample chicken, shrimp, crab and other varieties of gumbo, and get a taste of other foods restaurants offer. The Rotary Club will offer free popcorn and desserts will be for sale. As a boy, Porterie’s mother put him to work carefully stirring her gumbo roux until it browned to perfection. When it was time for broth, she’d add shrimp, sausage, or maybe the hen wings Daddy liked, he said. Nowdays Porterie says oysters is one of his favorite add-ins. No matter what the ticket holder’s favorite, Porterie said guests will get their fill of culture, recall good gumbo memories and make new ones at Taste of Gumbo. He is deputy superintendent of Port Arthur’s school district, which will have a “team” in the taste. Over the years, the event’s popularity has funded Rotary’s donation of about $250,000 to worthy causes. Children 5 and younger will be admitted at no charge. The Schooner, Floyd’s, Holiday Inn Park Central, Chick-fil-A and Medical Center of Southeast Texas will be among participants. The Rotary Club of Port Arthur will sell gumbo tickets at the door. If you’re in Port Arthur on Spring Break, catch the coast at Sea Rim State Park, a natural beach. Port Arthur is a Texas fishing vacation and birding hot spot.

SUMMARY:King Cakes herald in Mardi Gras season
DESCRIPTION:There’s a baby in the cake, and the one who finds him hosts the next party. Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas, Feb. 7-10, is a big party weekend for Port Arthur with lighted parades, beads for all and concerts from Easton Corbin, Chris Cagle and more. King cakes - a braided sweet roll wreath covered in green, gold and purple icing – is part of the feasting. The ring of cake symbolizes the circular path the Three Kings took to meet the baby Jesus. Whoever gets the serving with the plastic baby tucked inside is honored to host the next King Cake party. Rao’s Bakery in Nederland serves and ships their rich version of these cakes, filled with combinations of berries, cream cheese, cinnamon and apple. They send these comfort cakes from Southeast Texas to Mardi Gras revelers across the nation. Port Arthur visitors can stop in for a cake, full sized or “mini,” to flavor their visit. Mister Leathers will also guide guests to Mardi Gras-themed cakes adorned with a fleur-de-lis or star cookies in festival colors. Do you dare to try the Voodoo cake with chocolate and coconut? Leathers is manager at the Nederland restaurant, 3504 FM 367, across from Central Mall. The cozy bakery has a breakfast and lunch menu, and designer coffees to enjoy with your baked goods. Diners can pose with life sized Blues Brothers statues. Click here for the Mardi Gras schedule or visit mardigras.portarthur.com. While in town, stop by Museum o f the Gulf Coast for the temporary exhibit Texas Pop Festival Revisited, highlighting contributions from Janis Joplin and Edgar Winter, both of Southeast Texas fame.

DESCRIPTION:With two gold albums to his name, Chris Cagle has his own top three list of the most important things in life: “Family, ranch, music. That’s it.” He’ll take the Mardi Gras stage in downtown Port Arthur as the headliner at 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9. The TOTAL Krewe of Aurora Grand Parade, beginning at 6 p.m., will usher in his performance. “Back in the Saddle” is his latest release, featuring “Let There be Cowgirls.” “I Breathe In, I Breathe Out” was Cagle’s first No. 1 smash. SUMMARY:Sabine Woods spruced up for birders
DESCRIPTION:Birds can bathe in drip water from a new rock basin at Sabine Woods, the Texas Ornithological Society sanctuary near Sabine Pass. The Golden Triangle Audubon Society hosted a fall cleanup to get the site ready for birders and the feathered friends they come to observe. The society’s John A. Whittle considers the bathing area “very popular” for the birds in the group’s newsletter. Port Arthur’s position in America’s Central Flyway draws migratory birds and Sabine Woods, along with nearby Sea Rim State Park beach. The Great Texas Birding Trail guide calls Sabine Woods’ isolated stand of live oaks “among the most productive migrant stop-over sites along the entire Texas coast.” In early fall, hundreds of humming birds may swarm the lantanta thickets. During spring migrations, trees and shrubs attract thousands of migrant landbirds. Improvements at Sabine Woods include: more than a dozen hackberry trees planted in the east area, north of oaks planted a couple of years back; grooming of trails and open areas; thinning oaks and invasive species in other areas. The area is off Texas 87, about 4.2 miles from Sabine Pass on the north side. For more birding information, visit the Golden Triangle Audubon Society website. McFaddin and Texas Point National Wildlife Refuges are other area sites for wildlife observation and photography. For more on the Port Arthur area’s sporting and nature life, visit links to: Sea Rim State Park and the Great Texas Birding Trail. Coming with your boat? SUMMARY:Becky Barksdale live Nov. 3
DESCRIPTION:Becky Barksdale will play the blues for her hometown crowd in honor of her induction into the Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame. This singer, musician and film composer has toured with Michael Jackson and she’s earned her spot at Museum of the Gulf Coast. See her live in concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Performing Arts Center, Lamar State College-Port Arthur. Like legendary singer Janis Joplin, Barksdale was born in Port Arthur. Barksdale is co-based out of Los Angeles, where she performs on the West Coast blues and R&B circuit, and southeast Texas, where she maintains a personal studio. Barksdale’s grandfather gave her a guitar when she was 12. A professional at 16, she gigged with regional bands. After nailing down guitar and vocal duties with boogie-blues masters Canned Heat, Barksdale landed the lead guitar spot with Michael Jackson adding some fiery punch to the King of Pop’s 1993 Dangerous World Tour. The first artist to be signed by the House of Blues Music Company, Barksdale appeared on two compilations on the label before releasing “Real Live” (1999), a gripping mélange of electric blues and steamy rock that easily justified the growing hype crowning the “Red Hot Queen of the Blues.” “Cowgirl Blues” (2002), an EP of five original songs, unearthed her country roots (two great uncles were members of the Sons of the Pioneers), while Blues Revue Magazine declared that there was more emotion packed into the dozen real-deal blues tracks on “Out of the Blue” (2003) than racks of others. In recent years, much of Barksdale’s time has been spent scoring and performing music for film, movie trailers and TV spots. Her music is featured in such films as “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning,” “Cars,” “Mission Impossible III,” “Predator,” and “Finding Neverland.” Just in time for her induction, Barksdale will release yet another album. Barksdale will be formally inducted into the Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame exhibit within the Museum of the Gulf Coast at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2. There is no charge to attend this public event. Barksdale’s concert will be at Nov. 3 at the Performing Arts Center, on Procter Street in downtown Port Arthur. Tickets are $20 at the Museum of the Gulf Coast or on the night of the concert, as supplies last. Seating is general admission. Advance tickets may also be purchased by calling the Museum at (409) 982.7000. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Museum of the Gulf Coast and the Commercial Music Program at Lamar State College-Port Arthur.

SUMMARY:Caution: Artist at play
DESCRIPTION:"I don’t do a lot of work at home. I just play,” artist Sheila Bergeaux said. When she plays, beach glass gets wire-wrapped up into wearable art and paints get brushed into bulls and bouquets. Oils and watercolors are up at her Texas Artists Museum show this October. Visitors can take home a Texas yellow rose, framed in purple, a shade Bergeaux decided to visit from across the color palette. Lately, she’s taken to stringing up little art works of necklaces, earrings and bracelets, all for sale the TAM show. “I get excited looking at my beads,” Bergeaux said.

SUMMARY:Webb “moons” over area’s beauty
DESCRIPTION:Alert sunflowers coloring fields in China, Texas are doing more than looking good. Those pods will become biofuel, Clem T. Webb says. The adventurous, knowledge-seeking photographer captures their beauty in a Texas Artists Museum show offering his close-to-home views. “It’s a stateside flavor. . . eclectic. . . that’s how I think of it,” said Webb, who captured a captivating full moon over area icons. The people and scenery in his September show include titles “Cathedral Moon” and “Moon Over Beaumont.” The photo here is the moon over St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica in Beaumont, part of our area's faith trail. Museum of the Gulf Coast is another venue to admire art, history and pop culture in Port Arthur. Our other assets include Sea Rim State Park, and the Great Texas Birding Trail.

SUMMARY:Wanted: Sea Rim lovers to bag “bad guy” trash offenders
DESCRIPTION:Families, kites, tents and sandcastles belong at Sea Rim State Park. Empty cans, bottles and bags dotting sandy stretches of coastline don’t. The Texas Adopt-A-Beach program invites guests to join the Saturday, Sept. 22, fall cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon at Sea Rim State Park. A “Wanted” poster asks volunteers to look for Top Trash Offenders at Large on Texas Beaches, including Willis “The Water Boy,” representing a bottle that takes hundreds of years to decompose; Danny “The Drag,” a cigarette butt who sticks around 12 years; and Billy “The Bag Man,” a grocery sack leaving a mark for 20 years. Sea Rim offers miles of natural coastline and the Gambusia Trail boardwalk through marshland. Ben Herman, the brand-new park superintendent, said work is in progress to transform portable potties into more permanent structures, with outdoor showers. Hurricane Ike took out amenities and the state is working to get them back up for visitors. Camping is available. New loops and road beds are being poured now, Herman said. He comes to the coast from Fairfield Lake State Park and says he loves Sea Rim’s waters. “There’s so many attractions to offer: Playing on the beach, enjoying the sun and saltwater fishing. There’s marshlands, crabbing and little views of alligators every now and then,” Herman said. “It’s very diverse,” he said of his new territory. “In Texas State Parks, Sea Rim is the only park where the marshlands meet the gulf.” He’s got another park plug: A focus on safety. “We really gear Texas State Parks toward a family environment,” Herman said. The park entrance is on Texas 87 South, 10 miles west of Sabine Pass. For details, call Herman at (409) 971-2559 or visit www.TexasAdoptABeach.org. Cleanups are organized across Texas. Wear sunscreen, shoes, sunglasses and a hat; bring plenty of drinking water and mosquito repellent, check in by 9 a.m.; and get ready to clean, rain or shine. SUMMARY:Thunder and smoke at Battle of Sabine Pass
DESCRIPTION:Feel the history. Friends of Sabine Pass Battleground will present Dick Dowling Day, re-creating a Civil War Battle, Sept. 8. The weekend of living history camps honors Dick Dowling and his ragtag band of men who bested the Union on Sept. 8, 1863. Hear 1973 Queen Linda Guillory share her memories at Dick Dowling Day story 2012 “The ground will shake and will feel like thunder and you will smell the smoke of battle,” Micheal McGreevy, organizer, said. Bring the family for living history exhibits and reenactments of the famous battle. In 1863 a Union Navy flotilla of four gunboats and 5,000 men attempted to enter the Sabine Pass, the Texas Historical Commission reports: “Dowling's artillery drills paid off as the Confederates scored several direct hits on the federal ships, disabling two of them, and blocking the others’ passage. The Union forces retreated and the Davis Guard claimed the capture of 350 prisoners and a large quantity of supplies; they did not suffer a single casualty in the encounter. The unlikely victory of Dowling and the Davis Guard thwarted the Union invasion of Texas." Dick Dowling Day offers free admission and highlights include: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. – Gates open; living history demonstrations scheduled throughout the day 10 a.m. – Court-martial and Execution of Lt. Elijah P. Allen for desertion 10:30 a.m. – Battle reenactment 11:30 a.m. – Memorial Service, hosted by Jefferson County Historical Commission 1-2 p.m. – Walking tour of Sabine Pass Battleground State Historic Site. Guide: Edward Cotham, author of “Sabine Pass: The Confederacy’s Thermopylae” 2:30 p.m. – U.S. Raiding Party v. Mrs. Kate Dorman 3 p.m. – Battle reenactment Participants will include the 3rd Texas Artillery, the 11th Texas Artillery, the 11th Texas Calvary and the 15th Texas Infantry. Sabine Pass Battleground is 1.5 miles south of Sabine Pass on Dick Dowling Road, 15 miles south of Port Arthur via Texas 87. Sept. 8 is bustling in Port Arthur. Battle observers can take a quick trip to Sea Rim State Park, along Texas 87. SUMMARY:Cowboys and Indians, plus flowers
DESCRIPTION:Doris Webb has an eye-popping floral up at Texas Artists Museum, but she’s got her eye on something else. “There’s a painting of a cowboy I’d love to have,” Webb, president of the Nederland Art Guild, said. “We really have some good work,” she said of guild images on display through August. Cowboys and Native Americans, water birds and cypress swamps of Southeast Texas culture have been drawn and painted with colorful detail by guild members who take pride in their continuing art education through member classes. This year’s show has something new, digital photos on canvas, Webb said. Art lovers visiting Port Arthur should also visit Museum of the Gulf Coast for history and art. Joelle Smith Ford’s “Gumbo Girl” collages will be up from Aug. 12-Sept. 16. Whimsical, mixed-media collages recall her youth in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana in the ‘50s.

SUMMARY:Bowl, dine, dance
DESCRIPTION:Bowl, dine, dance Max Bowl in Port Arthur has a new look and more is on the way. Here are the Top 10 reasons to “strike” up some fun: 1. The Max Burger is a half a pound of meat with crisp bacon and melted cheese. That, with a large order of fries, goes over pretty well, Doug Davidson says of his family’s bowling center. 2. Driving games, Dance Dance Revolution, The Wheel of Fortune and King of the Big Wheel are snazzy plays in the new arcade. Redeem credits for prizes from decorated duct tape to a cake pop maker. 3. Kids are welcome and parents can enjoy a lounge area as they watch their young bowlers knock down some pins. 4. Cosmic Bowl features black light evening bowling and a spaceship. Davidson said a disco-style dance area near the lanes is in the works. 5. Bingo! There’s room for nearly 200 players who play traditional cards or electronic ones. 6. Lunch and learn business meetings will never be the same. Groups can meet a bit, bowl a game, meet some more and eat. 7. Pen & Tonic is a bar with a colored light show, video and karaoke. 8. Hip and classic tunes from The Bowling Music Network energize visitors. Davidson said the music is “mom approved.” 9. Laser Frenzy challenges players to emerge from a lighted maze. 10. A two-story laser tag area is on the way. A pro-shop, music system and friendly staff are also on the list of reasons to visit this family entertainment center at 3500 Regional Drive. SUMMARY:G.W. Bailey takes a little piece of Port Arthur
DESCRIPTION:“If those rocks could talk,” actor G.W. Bailey queried, reminiscing about the pink granite slabs along Port Arthur’s Sea Wall. When a guest presented him with a “chip” off the wall, Bailey got a sentimental tone, and recalled his youth and good times on the waterfront. Bailey graciously posed for photos at classmates at the recent Thomas Jefferson’s Class of ’62 high school reunion dinner at Holiday Inn Park Central . Red Hussars, from the school’s famous drum and bugle corp., also enhanced the weekend that included a sock hop and visit to see Bailey’s exhibit at Museum of the Gulf Coast. The actor has had roles in the “Police Academy” movie series and TV series “M*A*S*H,” “The Closer” and “Major Crimes.” He said he’d keep his “Port Arthur rock” next to the piece of the Berlin Wall a friend had given him. Port Arthur Convention & Visitors Bureau supported the Class of ’62 in preparing for its reunion. Family and class reunions and convention groups with bookings at Port Arthur hotels are encouraged to work with the bureau for amenities including “goody bags,” tourism brochures, name tags, welcome banners and more. SUMMARY:Real cowboy paints it like it is
DESCRIPTION:Even other artists have thought Red Allen’s detailed oil paintings were photographs. “Hurry Up and Wait” is an example of his skill. The canvas features three cowboys on horseback passing time in the field. An unforgiving sun casts shadows from their hats onto their denim work shirts. Viewers can almost swat flies and smell the hay as they, too, work up a sweat. Allen’s work is up in April at Texas Artists Museum. Sure he studied business in college, but he also worked as a cowboy at White Ranch in Chambers County and at the famed LX Ranch outside Amarillo. That must be how all those images of boots, kids sitting on fences and animals got stuck in his head. This award-winning artist also painted an image of Will Rogers. After a visit to TAM, head to Museum of the Gulf Coast to experience more of Port Arthur. It’s also the season to head to Sea Rim State Park.

SUMMARY:Join Spring Cleaning at Sea Rim
DESCRIPTION:The party is at Sea Rim State Park. Bring sunscreen. The beach is getting a spring cleaning and Tracy Ferguson will check in Adopt-A-Beach volunteers who want to make this natural beach sparkle. Be prepared to work from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 28. “It’s our Texas beaches and we need to keep them clean,” Ferguson, park supervisor, said. “You never know what exotic things have washed ashore.” He said a group was surprised to find Chinese lettering on a bottle of Pert shampoo found on the beach, but knows the original user probably wouldn’t want it to spoil the view half a world away. Sea Rim offers miles of “just beach” and the Gambusia Trail through marshland. This shore took a hit from Hurricane Ike, but has been back open for several months. Ferguson said plans are underway to turn the portable potties back into a more permanent structure and add outdoor showers. Camping is available. Help Turn the Tide Against Trash!” is the slogan for this year’s cleanup. The park entrance is on Texas 87 South, 10 miles west of Sabine Pass. For details call Ferguson at (409) 971-2559 or visit www.TexasAdoptABeach.org. Cleanups are organized across Texas. Wear sunscreen, shoes, sunglasses and a hat; bring plenty of drinking water and mosquito repellent, check in by 9 a.m.; and get ready to clean, rain or shine. Save the date for the Sept. 22 fall cleanup. SUMMARY:A thousand trees for Sabine Pass
DESCRIPTION:Ever heard of a Mexican Plum tree? Volunteer yourself at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 14, and you’ll get up-close with them. Julie Saunders is rounding up supporters to green Sabine Pass. Residents are asking for help planting a thousand trees. Show up at the R.L. Eldridge Community Center at 8 a.m. with shovels, trailers, gloves and mosquito repellent. Volunteers will haul, plant, deliver water and serve lunch. All are welcome to donate tools, water, mulch, planting mix and anything else that will help get trees into the ground. Sabine Pass is home to a coastal community between Port Arthur and Sea Rim State Park that took big hits in Hurricanes Rita and Ike. Spirited residents have rebuilt and reestablished. The area is home of The Big Bopper, of “Chantilly Lace” fame, and grounds where Dick Dowling’s men defeated Confederate soldiers. Friends of Sabine Pass Battlegrounds will commemorate the 149th anniversary of the battle on Sept. 8, 2012. Dick Dowling Lions Club has accepted plum, oak and elm trees that the Apache Corp. donated to replenish trees lost after Hurricane Ike. Leadership Southeast Texas is conducting the project. Julie Saunders is a Sabine Pass resident and Leadership Southeast Texas participant. She says the group aims to educate and inspire leaders by promoting better understanding of the nine counties of Southeast Texas. For Cajun Jam details, call Jerry Bellot, president of the Cajun French Music Association of Louisiana Inc. Golden Triangle Chapter, at (409) 983-5118. SUMMARY:Frankie Avalon headlines Gulf Coast Gala
DESCRIPTION:Did you scream for Frankie? Remember “Venus?” Fifties heartthrob Frankie Avalon will rock the ninth annual Gulf Coast Gala Saturday, April 28, at the Carl A. Parker Multipurpose Center at Lamar State College-Port Arthur. Avalon has been a star feature in more than 30 movies and two dozen hit records including “Venus”, “Bobby Sox to Stockings” and “Why. “ “The gala has grown each year. We’ve had some wonderful entertainers,” Dr. Sam Monroe, LSC-PA president, said. “And we’re really looking forward to an exciting performance from Frankie Avalon at this year’s gala.” The formal event, which includes dinner and entertainment, begins with a 6 p.m. reception. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m., and entertainment will follow. Individual tickets are $125. To plan your evening, call Donna Schion at 984-6101. Born in Philadelphia, Avalon had his early trumpet playing career end abruptly when a family friend, Bob Marcucci, heard him sing and sign him to a recording contract. His first song, “De De Dinah,” became a smash hit and his recording of “Venus” was one of the biggest selling hits of the 1950s. Follow-ups included “Bobbysocks to Stockings,” “Gingerbread,“ “Just Ask Your Heart,” and “A Boy Without A Girl.” He is credited with having the final No. 1 hit of the ‘50s with “Why” reaching that status in December 1959. As an actor, he starred with Alan Ladd in “Guns of Timberland “and John Wayne in “The Alamo.” Other film credits include “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, “and the hit musical “Grease.” He starred in classic beach movies such as “Beach Party,” “Muscle Beach Party,” “Beach Blanket Bingo” and “Bikini Beach.” Avalon’s appearance at the International Festival of Stars in Romania marked the second time that an entertainer from the United States has performed in that Iron Curtain country since World War II, the other being Louis Armstrong. Avalon is an avid golfer and lives in Los Angeles with his wife Kay, who he married in 1963. They have eight children. Lamar State’s first gala was developed in 2004 to benefit cultural and visual arts at the Museum of the Gulf Coast, and to provide support for the college’s “Discovery” youth program, Alumni Fund, athletic scholarships, musical and theatrical productions and a variety of special projects, such as Lamar State’s July 4 celebration and the Regional Citizen Bee. SUMMARY:Follow The Boudin Trail
DESCRIPTION:Pork, rice and onions get squeezed into a link we Southeast Texans call boudin. Or, sometimes it's spelled boudain. We’re serious about the spicy stuff, and its one of the things Cajuns love to share with newcomers. It’s a popular breakfast food with eggs and biscuits, can serve as a snack with saltines and fits right into a bun for carnival food. Boudin is welcome on most any table, but making it is quite another task, reserved for the masters. Museum of the Gulf Coast serves up The Boudin Trail, a Southern Foodways Alliance traveling exhibit on display through March 29. Follow the story of boudin culture from Texas, back to Louisiana and back to France. Sometimes locals package up a mess of boudin and send it to family members who miss their links. The museum offers visitors a list of a few places to pick some up while in Port Arthur. They include: In Port Arthur: Nick’s on Procter Street; Judice’s French market & Deli on Seventh Street; The Boudain Hut on Gulfway Drive In Groves: Larry’s French market on Pure Atlantic Road In Nederland: Happy Donuts on Nederland Avenue and Davis Donuts on FM 365 serve boudin kolaches

DESCRIPTION: Forgive him for his tall tales. Mike & His Trike grab attention at the South Texas State Fair. It isn’t just his rainbow pants. Look him up, literally. “I’m 10 feet tall, and my trike is 7 feet,” says Mike, who writes poetry. Chatty Mike can rhyme a name like Sarah with “mascara” to let a fair-goer know how beautiful she is. Here’s something else he can do from his lofty perspective: “I’m a rescuer of lost balloons,” he said. Catch Mike, rides, food on sticks, livestock and the usual fair fun through April 1 as the Young Men’s Business League hosts the fair at Ford Park in Beaumont. The YMBL Rodeo is set for March 30-31. DESCRIPTION:King Gumbo is George Newsome’s title for Taste of Gumbo, Etc., the Rotary Club of Port Arthur’s annual house-packing fundraiser serving up the best from area restaurants and service groups. From 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 17, visitors can get their fill of Cajun elixirs featuring sausage, chicken and seafood. Newsome will head the Taste, which will also feature other types of food. Guests can sample their fill for an $8 admission, which will benefit area charities. The okra-rich concoction from H20, a new Port Arthur seafood restaurant, is headed for Taste of Gumbo. Wayne Kung, manager, said he recreated his recipe from a New Orleans version that mesmerized him. “We sauté the okra,” Kung said. Attendees are in for a “real treat,” Newsome said. The Schooner, Chick-fil-A, Port Arthur International Seafarers’ Center and Medical Center of Southeast Texas will be among participants. The Rotary Club of Port Arthur will sell gumbo tickets at the door. Lighthouses and Longhorns, the U.S. Lighthouse Society Texas Tour, wraps up in Port Arthur this weekend. Lighthouse fans from all over met up at the Alamo and headed south to explore unique Texas landmarks. Jeff Gales, a club representative, said members had toured “every inch” of U.S. coastline but this area of Texas. “The Gulf Coast of Texas is a vast, remote section of the United States, and orchestrating this monumental effort to visit these historic landmarks demonstrates the Society's dedication to draw attention to all of America's precious lighthouses and their preservation,” said Gales, who didn’t get to make this trip. He’s “stuck” in his lighthouse office in the Point No Point area of Hansville, Wa. He said he’s cheering on members who got to make the trek to Port Arthur. SUMMARY:Toss a chicken; head for Longneck Road
DESCRIPTION:The chicken toss courir parade opens Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas 2012 on Thursday, Feb. 16. That’s when children chase a chicken who, by tradition, lands in a gumbo. This one is symbolic, and will keep its feathers on for festival fun. After the parade passes by Port Arthur’s historic homes along the sea wall, Longneck Road will kick off a weekend of concerts from headliners including Wayne Toups, Kevin Fowler and Geno Delafose. Longneck Road’s bassist Ron Arceneaux says revelers will get a mix of the band’s original Texas and classic rock. In 2011, the Southeast Texas band opened for Chuck Berry, Ronnie Milsap and national touring guitarists. Dick LeMasters, lead singer, said the band is ready to rock this 20th annual family Mardi Gras that will fill downtown Port Arthur with lighted parades, concerts, a carnival and food from Feb. 16-19. “We love events like Mardi Gras, where everyone is there to have a great time,” LeMasters, lead singer, said. Sharing the bill with Mardi Gras headliners such as local legend Jivin’ Gene Bourgeois is also a highlight for Longneck Road. “One of the best things about playing bigger shows is getting to meet artists that we’ve looked up to,” said Longneck Road lead guitarist Miles Sykes. Being a part of the statewide marketing campaign for Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas has also helped to raise Longneck Road’s profile around the state. “Two years ago, we were a local band,” said drummer Adam King. “Thanks to events like Mardi Gras, our name gets spread across Texas in magazines like Texas Monthly, and all of a sudden we’re known state-wide.” Visit mardigras.portarthur.com for more info and make sure to visit Museum of the Gulf Coast for ¡CARNAVAL! , a traveling exhibit featuring festival exhibits from around the world.

SUMMARY:Hotel lobby a winter wonderland
DESCRIPTION:Mrs. Claus has booked a bed in the lobby of Holiday Inn Park Central. The anticipated annual display features Santa offering his wife both a hot water bottle and a gift in her cozy quarters. A new feature is an old fashioned TV set, which actually affords a view of a moving holiday village behind its screen. Hotelier Kathy Rachwal revamps her Christmas drawing room party, kitchen bakery and Nativity scene each year. Elaborately coiffed and dressed figures are posed about detailed settings, such as a ‘50s-style kitchen overflowing with realistic “baked” goods. This season look for a lighted sleigh, toy soldiers and even more settings in the bar. Bruce Oler of guest relations says both local and out-of-town visitors come with cameras every year to capture the festive display. Holiday Inn Park Central is at 2929 Jimmy Johnson Blvd. Oler says that when the Christmas scenes come down, the Mardi Gras float will go up. Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas is Feb. 16-19 in downtown Port Arthur. Museum of the Gulf Coast will feature "Carnival" from Jan. 28-March18 2012.

SUMMARY:What was she thinking?
DESCRIPTION:Shirley McCraw Peel asks artists to look beyond what they see. Once in a class, a curly-headed cowgirl model took a break from the stand. That’s when Peel got a real feel for her subject, who cupped her chin in a pensive pose. Viewers can imagine what the woman in the painting is thinking through December at Peel’s Texas Artists Museum retrospective. Peel, also an instructor, said she prefers oils and portraits because “the subject matter is endless.” “You can paint the same person over and over,” she said. SUMMARY:Johnny Preston is Solid Gold in Port Arthur
DESCRIPTION:Hit makers will honor “Running Bear” singer Johnny Preston in concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, with the Solid Gold tribute concert at Lamar State College-Port Arthur Performing Arts Center. “Running Bear loved Little White Dove,” goes the catchy 1959 song about youths separated by warring tribes. Other hits included "Cradle of Love" (1960), "Feel So Fine" (1962), and "Free Me" (1962). Until his death in March of 2011, Preston called Southeast Texas home and continued to perform in Branson, Mo. and travel the world with various Golden Oldies tours. Jivin’ Gene, Dickey Lee, Chris Montez and Johnny Tillotson, area musicians who called Preston a friend, will take the stage to perform in his honor. Lamar’s center is at 1700 Procter St. in Port Arthur. Proceeds benefit the Museum of the Gulf Coast and the Commercial Music Program at Lamar State College-Port Arthur. General admission tickets are $20 at the Museum of the Gulf Coast at 700 Procter St. in Port Arthur. SUMMARY:French scarves inspire Bates’ TAM works
DESCRIPTION: Delle Bates saw scarves on everyone on his recent visit to France. Even people in bathing suits tied one on. He’s worked the flair into the several oils he’s created this year, and visitors can see his “French girls” at Port Arthur’s Texas Artists Museum in October. Using black for his negative space and working in olive branches are other inspirations from hitting about 60 museums on his pilgrimage. “I’m not an old hippie. I wish I would have been,” Bates, who has an Orange studio, said. A dark cadmium redhead with absinthe-green eyes is named “Lucy in the Sky.” He’s also showing angels in T-shirts that came to him after Hurricane Rita. Jean Gunn and James Black will also show works in October. TAM, at, 3501 Cultural Center Drive, offers monthly Second Sunday programs with entertainment, often combined with artists’ receptions.

SUMMARY:Bum Phillips finds his "way" home
DESCRIPTION:Museum of the Gulf Coast has the goods on coaching legend O.A. “Bum” Phillips, who caught football fever in the Port Arthur area. The former Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints coach has ties to several surrounding cities and the newly-dedicated Bum Phillips Way runs through two of them. Phillips, called “the winningest coach in franchise history,” supported high school football on Sept. 30 at the unveiling of signs marking the road, previously known as Port Neches Avenue as it curves into Nederland Avenue. Ceremonies drew fans in both cities, where both high schools claimed him as coach. He was set to toss the coin at Mid-County Madness, the big rival game of the area’s season. Museum of the Gulf Coast reports Phillips was born in Orange, attended high school in Beaumont, played football at Lamar Junior College, and was the head football coach at Nederland and Port Neches-Groves before taking the Houston Oilers to the AFC Championships twice. The Museum also features info on Wade Phillips, Bum’s son, who served as the Oilers' defensive line coach and went on to head coach several NFL teams including the Dallas Cowboys. Jimmy Johnson, another former Dallas Cowboys coach who grew up in Port Arthur, is also featured in the Museum. SUMMARY:Come for the court martial, stay for the battle
DESCRIPTION: Friends of Sabine Pass Battleground will present Dick Dowling Days , re-creating a Civil War Battle, Sept. 10-11. The weekend of living history camps honors Dick Dowling and his ragtag band of men who bested the Union on Sept. 8, 1863. The Texas Historical Commission reports that “a Union navy flotilla of four gunboats and 5,000 men attempted to enter the Sabine Pass. Dowling's artillery drills paid off as the Confederates scored several direct hits on the federal ships, disabling two of them, and blocking the others’ passage. The Union forces retreated and the Davis Guard claimed the capture of 350 prisoners and a large quantity of supplies; they did not suffer a single casualty in the encounter. The unlikely victory of Dowling and the Davis Guard thwarted the Union invasion of Texas." Weekend highlights include: Saturday, Sept. 10 9 a.m. – Camps open to public, living history throughout the day 10 a.m. – Court martial and execution of Lt. Elijah P. Allen for desertion 11:30 a.m. – Memorial service, hosted by Jefferson County Historical Commission 2 p.m. – Battle re-enactment 5 p.m. – Gates close to public, closing ceremonies to follow Sunday, Sept. 11 9 a.m. – Camp prayer meeting, camps open to public, living history throughout the day 10 a.m. – Court martial and execution of Lt. SUMMARY:Movies, memories make World War I exhibit
DESCRIPTION: A World War I soldier learned a new language to command French horses. Another gave a French girl an American penny; in return he received a lock of hair, which he kept until he died. David DeJonge, the photojournalist who compiled “WWI: Final Survivors,”spoke with veterans when they were more than 100 years old to capture their images and memories. The exhibition will appear at Museum of the Gulf Coast through Sept. 18 and includes a movie series. Short biographies accompany large color photos of the former soldiers as proud senior citizens. They pose alert with patriotic medals and symbols, including Johnny Henry Foster Babcock, who is dressed in a jogging suit as he cradles the folded American flag. The Canadian flag of his homeland is in the background. Military posters, a vintage firearm and the disc-style dog tags of the day are also on exhibit. DeJonge worked with Survivor Quest, his years-long project to locate, identify, interview and photograph the last surviving WWI veterans. These survivors are the final witnesses from the United States and England that served from 1914-1919. They have all since passed, with Frank Woodruff Buckles being the last to perish at 110. Buckles, who also survived being a civilian POW in the Philippines in World War II, died of natural causes at his home in Charles Town, West Virginia on Feb. 27, 2011. He was the last surviving North American WWI Veteran out of the 4,756,000 that served in the “Great War”. Get group tours through Sept. 16. Groups of 10 or more may tour for $2 a person by scheduling in advance. The exhibition has inspired a free Veteran Appreciation Film Series on Saturday afternoons at 2 p.m. They include: * Korea Sept. 3 – “M*A*S*H” (1970) * Vietnam Sept. 17 – Bob Hope’s Salute to the Troops: The Vietnam Years Film attendees may enjoy free popcorn and free admission to the temporary WWI exhibition as well as the Museum’s permanent exhibits. SUMMARY:Swamp "pops" at Texas Artists Museum
DESCRIPTION:“Toledo Cypress” is a glimpse of Southeast Texas that Jody Domingue painted into a best-of-show entry at the Nederland Art Guild Show. Catch the swamp with “pop” and 38 other works of art all August at Texas Artists Museum in Port Arthur, Texas. The Port Arthur area is known for "swamp pop" music. Domingue's colors make her canvas pop with the colors of nature. Domingue’s work is featured in the Texas Room at TAM. She teaches from her home studio and has brought students to state level competition. The rest of the guild show features Texas topics from magnolia blossoms and football to waterways. Magnolia blossoms, football and waterways are subjects artists picked from the ‘paint-what-you-know” offerings of Southeast Texas. For information on Nederland Art Guild, contact Doris Webb at we4dor@aol.com or call 409-728-1875. The museum is at 3501 Cultural Center Drive in Port Arthur. SUMMARY:Port Arthur’s beauty at Texas Artists Museum
DESCRIPTION: Brenda tried to buy the Brenda Lu, but her husband wouldn’t sell it. Bobby Pastorella used a plain old No. 2 pencil to sweep the professional drawing division of the Nederland Art Guild show, up all August at Texas Artists Museum in Port Arthur, Texas. Pastorella drew a boat from real life, but he couldn’t pronounce the name. He christened the one in his picture “Brenda,” after his wife, and added the “Lu,” from a friend’s nickname for her. But when she offered to purchase the completed drawing, he told her it wasn’t for sale. She may get lucky with another piece. Pastorella says he’s sketched 38 images since February. “I try to do stuff that’s indigenous to the area. I love animated movement,” he said, adding the beach and swamps are among his favorites. Magnolia blossoms, football and waterways are subjects artists picked from the ‘paint-what-you-know” offerings of Southeast Texas. Jody Domingue earned best of show with a cypress swamp and Wanda Mitchell’s work earned best floral honor. Doris Webb - Nederland Art Guild President, invites visitors to view the 39 works in the show, which also include western and Native American scenes. “Our judge for the show was Roy Bares, artist and art instructor for Monsignor Kelly High School in Beaumont. Roy is an amazing artist. His work is very much in demand,” Webb said. For information on Nederland Art Guild, visit Webb at we4dor@aol.com or call 409-728-1875. A reception for the show will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, following the Second Sunday program at the Museum, 3501 Cultural Center Drive in Port Arthur. Museum goers can also get their fill of history and local legends Janis Joplin, The Big Bopper, Robert Rauschenberg, Jimmy Johnson and others at Museum of the Gulf Coast. Port Arthur is a Texas fishing vacation destination. Those who want to paint their own Texas beach scene can visit Sea Rim State Park, about 17 miles away from Texas Artists Museum.
